All You Need to Know About Type 2 Connectors (IEC 62196)

5/21/2025

So the electric vehicle market grows, and the question now is: Which charging connector should everyone use?

More and more often, it’s what is known as the Type 2 connector or IEC 62196. Here's everything you need to know about the type 2 connector, whether you're buying an electric vehicle, getting yourself a charging station, or just want to understand how it all works.

Type 2 Connector

What Is a Type 2 Connector?

Most of the electric cars in Europe, and in other parts of the world, use the Type 2 connector, which is the standard industry plug for AC charging. It is circular and has 7 pins; the contents are:
  • Single or 3-phase power. If the contracted power isn't more than 13,86 kW we suggest you to opt for a single-phase plant. You don’t trip the fuses and you pay less. But, a three-phase system should be installed if 13,86 kW is insufficient.
  • Charging speeds up to 22 kW
  • Smart charging features (communication between the car and charger). Smart charging enables effective management of the charging process, in contrast to traditional charging, which begins immediately when the car is connected. Connecting charging stations to customers and operators via real-time data transfer is the main goal of smart charging. The platform's software automatically analyzes and visualizes this data flow in real-time, enabling automated decisions about when and how to charge electric vehicles. This charging technology not only maximizes energy efficiency but also assists operators in allocating energy among several vehicles in a way that prevents overloading the electrical grid and going over the building's maximum capacity.

Is Type 2 the Same as CCS?

Not exactly, but they are connected.
CCS (Combined Charging System) extends the Type 2 connector with two additional direct current (DC) contacts to provide a 500-volt DC fast charging function. When compared to AC charging, this enables significantly faster charging times.
So, most EVs today use a CCS port that accepts both regular Type 2 and CCS plugs.

Where Is Type 2 Used?

In Europe and many other areas, the Type 2 IEC 62196 connector is the standard. In Europe, this connector type is used by the majority of home wall boxes and public charging stations. Even the Tesla Model S and Model X sold in Europe have the Type 2 plug.

What EVs Use Type 2?

Pretty much every major EV sold in Europe supports Type 2 charging, including:
  • Tesla (European models)
  • Volkswagen ID. series
  • BMW i3 / i4 / iX
  • Hyundai Ioniq & Kona Electric
  • Mercedes-Benz EQ models
Even EV motorcycles and niche electric vehicles without DC charging support often use Type 2 only.

What About Other Connectors Like CHAdeMO or Tesla?

  • CHAdeMO: Mostly used in Japan, like Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi Outlander, but rapidly declining in global support. In Europe now, less than 15% of new installations have CHAdeMO connectors, and less than 30% of all fast-charging stations have them.
  • Tesla: Uses its plug in North America, but European Teslas use Type 2/CCS.
  • Adapters exist, but are becoming less necessary as Type 2 IEC 62196 becomes more universal.

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 EV connectors?

The word "type” in EV connector describes the various plug generations used to charge electric vehicles using alternating current (AC). Generally speaking, vehicles delivered in Europe starting in 2018 have a type 2 charging port. Type 1 charging connectors are standard on older cars and cars made in Asia and North America.

Only 1-phase charging is supported by the Type 1 standard (J1772), with a maximum charging power of 7.4 kW (32A / 1-phase / 230V). The standard is primarily applied to Asian auto models. For example, the Nissan LEAF (1st generation), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Kia Soul EV, and triplets all use this charging port and plug.

The Type 2 connector, officially known as IEC 62196 but often referred to simply as a "Mennekes” (named after the German company that designed it), is the standard plug for charging electric vehicles in Europe. Type 2 charging cables come in two main configurations: single-phase and three-phase.

The vast majority of cars manufactured in Europe come with this connector. Quick charging capabilities are provided via the Combined Charging System (CCS), which is commonly seen in vehicles that use this connector. The majority of public charging stations also have a Type 2 connector.

The Type 2 connector is designed with built-in safety features, including two special signal pins known as PP (proximity pilot) and CP (control pilot). These pins help protect both the vehicle and the charger during use. The CP pin is slightly shorter, which means it disconnects first when the plug is removed. This clever design cuts off the electrical current just before the plug is fully pulled out, preventing sparks or electrical arcing. As a result, the charging process is safer and the wear on the plug and socket is reduced, helping extend the lifespan of both the cable and connector.
